Guidelines for composing your secret question and answer.

The secret question and answer is for use if you forget your password and/or your User ID. With a well-chosen question and answer, our automated account recovery process will allow you to continue to use your account without the need to call for help.

The answer to your question should be:
  • Something that does not change over time.
  • Not easily guessed. There should be many possible wrong answers. Choose something that is not generally known and could not easily be obtained - particularly if it could be obtained electronically.
  • Short - probably one word that would always be typed the same way. This is so that our automated account recovery process can unambiguously match your answer.

Good Examples:
  • “What was the last name of my first grade teacher?”
  • “What was the name of my first pet?”
  • “What is the last name of my favorite teacher as a child?”
  • “What is the first name of my childhood best friend?”

Bad Examples:
  • “What is my favorite color?” Might change. Might be easily guessed, especially if it is something like red, green, or blue.
  • “What is my mothers maiden name?” Much overused. Can be obtained from a variety of sources.
  • “In what month was my father born?” There are only 12 possible answers. Might be obtained from a variety of sources.
  • “What color is my car?” You might have a different answer next year. Many people might know or could obtain the answer.
  • “What is my shoe size?” Limited number of possible answers. Others might know or could guess.
